Construction begins on the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park

Teams from Bachy Soletanche Group Limited will be building the foundations for the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park at Lok Ma Chau Loop. The project has reached an important milestone with the start of work on the foundations for Building 1.

The Project

This project involves the construction of the foundations for two sections: building 1 (section 1) and the connection area between the service networks (water, electricity, etc.) (section 2). Both sections are to be built within 11 months. Section 1 involves the installation of 28 bored piles with a diameter of 3 m, an average depth of 45 m and a widening diameter of 4.95 m into the rock socket.

Crews will also install a grout curtain consisting of 282 813 mm diameter interlocking pipe piles, 52 king posts and a steel work platform. This section requires bulk excavation of a total volume of 28,300 m³, with a shoring system comprising three to four layers.

Section 2 includes the construction of 4 bored piles 2 m in diameter with an average depth of 44 m and a widening 2.5 m in diameter. It also includes the installation of a grout curtain consisting of 64 813 mm diameter interlocking pipe piles.

For this section, a total excavation volume of 3,143 m³ and a shoring system comprising four layers will be required. A pile cap and a concrete structure will also be built.

Addressing Challenges

The teams were not immune to difficulties. Indeed, the congested site area, measuring 60 m x 45 m in section 1 and 27 m x 15 m in section 2, made it difficult to coordinate simultaneous work between bored piles and pipe pile operations.

To mitigate this problem, the team has prepared a step-by-step and activity-by-activity detailed program plan for work sequencing to ensure the project runs smoothly.

To improve program efficiency, the teams took proactive measures to reduce project duration:

  • The design of the excavation and lateral support (ELS) was reviewed to reduce a strut layer.
  • Authorization to work beyond regulatory hours while respecting noise pollution limits.
  • Prefabricating interlocking pipe pile casings and ELS steel members offsite.

Next steps

The completion of the foundations for Building 1 will allow the next phase to begin: the construction of the building’s superstructure. The completion of the Innovation and Technology Park should stimulate innovation and economic growth in Hong Kong and Shenzhen.

Congratulations to the teams at Bachy Soletanche Group Limited for getting the project off the ground!
