Bachy Soletanche Singapore: Progress on the Construction of Riviera Station

Bachy Soletanche Singapore is involved in various foundation works for the new metro station, Riviera Station.

In 2020, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced the route and location of the stations for the Cross Island Line (CRL) – Punggol Extension. This means a new metro line will connect Pasir Ris to Punggol, making travel between the eastern and northeastern districts of Singapore more convenient. The new line will be 7.3 kilometers long and will have four metro stations: Punggol, Riviera, Elias, and Pasir Ris.

The project

This project includes the Diaphragm Wall, Barrette Piles, and Cross Wall, as outlined in Contract P103. This phase of the project involves the installation of approximately 859 linear meters of Earth Retaining and Stabilizing Structures (ERSS), featuring diaphragm walls of varying thicknesses:

  • (1200mm, 1500mm) DIAPHRAGM WALL – 284 Panels, approximately 62m depth
    • (1000mm) FIN WALL + CROSS WALL (FCW) – 76 Panels, approximately 52m depth
    • (1000mm) CROSS WALL – 76 Panels, approximately 52m depth
    • (1200mm) BARRETTE PILE – 97 Panels, approximately 55m depth

Soil Conditions
The construction site lies on the Kallang and Bedok Formations. In the soil borings, the layers are as follows:

  • Above 9m: fill layers
  • 9m to 19m: loose, silty fine to medium sand (O.E)
  • 19m to 25m: medium-dense, silty fine sand (O.C)
  • 25m to 62m: very dense, silty sand (O.B)

Special Exposure

  1. Tandem Lifting
Tandem lifting of a rebar cage is a critical technique used to handle and position large, heavy reinforcement cages safely and efficiently. This process involves using two or more cranes working in coordination to lift and place the rebar cage, ensuring precise control and stability throughout the operation.
  2. Noise Mitigation for Machines
We have installed ANC (Active Noise Control) technology on the crane to reduce noise pollution. Additionally, we installed the 500mm (W) x 1000mm (L) Japanese noise-absorbing steel panels to enclose our desander plant as the project are located very close to HDB (Housing Development Board) buildings.
  3. T-Panel Transportation Support
As the design team worked to finalize the shop drawings for the T-shaped rebar cage, an issue emerged concerning the flange section of the roof cage. This section required the installation of H50 couplers, which posed a challenge because the fabricator could not install them on the floor. Instead, the flange needed to be rotated for proper installation. This situation indicated that temporary support would be essential during both the fabrication process and subsequent transport.

Equipment

The primary equipment used includes excavation cranes fitted with hydraulic grabs (KS) and the Sany SH700.

Progress of the Works

In January 2024, the project reached an important milestone with the start of the first excavation. By October 2024, the works progressed with the construction of the guide wall for the T-shaped diaphragm wall.
Finally, in January 2025, BSS successfully installed the first T-panel diaphragm wall panel. This achievement demonstrates the commitment and expertise of the team, who completed this complex task with precision. Congratulations to the teams for reaching this milestone!
