Soletanche Bachy France donates pumps to NGO Ummanité for access to drinking water in Mali
Port 2000: a project marked by numerous environmental and social initiatives.
At the beginning of 2023, Soletanche Bachy France’s site teams completed phase 3 of “the Port 2000” project for the Grand Port Maritime du Havre, marked by numerous actions aimed at reducing their environmental footprint.
Review of phase 3 of the project
Starting in early 2020, the third phase of this project involves the construction of berths 11 & 12 at Port 2000
As part of the project, pumps are installed and used to lower the water table inside the slurry wall enclosure. This lowering of the water table enabled dry earthworks to be carried out to install the Anchors and the back sheet-pile wall. Once the curtain and anchors had been installed, the excavation was backfilled, and the temporary drawdown stopped and dismantled. Following this stage, some 50 pumps were removed and recovered.
With a view to sustainable development, at the end of each project, the teams keep a close eye on what happens to the materials. They consider whether they can be reallocated to other sites or reused by associations.
Some twenty pumps were deemed unusable in compliance with applicable technical and safety regulations, due to wear and tear of the equipment, and were therefore scrapped. They were entrusted to Hettier for material recycling. As for the remaining 32 pumps, still in very good working order, it was decided to donate them to the NGO Ummanité.
Focus on the NGO Ummanité
The NGO was created in 2012, on the initiative of a group of volunteer friends, eager to make their contribution, to improving the world around them. They collaborate with local communities and several associations based around the world to accomplish their mission:
- Making life easier for thousands of people in difficulty thanks to a structure that pools skills,
- Organize time and invest donations in local and international support projects.
In addition to this mission, the NGO seeks to raise local awareness of solidarity. In each of its projects, it conveys messages to all generations, inviting them to take part in actions.
The NGO runs various initiatives throughout the year, organized around three programs: International Actions, Culture and Health Awareness.
As part of the Actions Internationales program, Soletanche Bachy France donated 32 pumps of 20m3/h and 60m3/h (with 30m of electrical cables). This equipment was transferred to Mali to supply the Sikasso region with drinking water. This donation benefited more than 28 villages, i.e. 7769 beneficiaries.
